CCDD Bonding

On a beautiful Saturday morning, a pack of CCDD skaters hit the Canal for some seriously good times. We met at Pretoria Bridge, skated up to Dow’s Lake and then back again. We worked up a great sweat, had a number laughs, heard some crazy awesome FUNdraising ideas from two amazing Freshies and enjoyed transferring our mad derby skills to the world’s longest outdoor skating “rink”. Breakfast was mowed down after and we all went home, firm in the knowledge that CCDD has an extremely bright future. Thanks to everyone for coming out and for those who couldn’t, we will be planning another outing because it was just too fun not to do again!

Skaters, Refs, Coaches:

Please note that there is an exclusion to our contract with 440 Albert Street (Ottawa Tech) for the 29th so there will be no practice on roller skates. However, practice is not cancelled. We are going to grab ice skates (beg, borrow, steal for those who don’t own a pair…anyone with extras please post size and style and connect with those in need) and practice on the canal. We can work on our derby stances. We can squat, practice speed drills and have all kinds of fun and then break for poutine.

Those of you doing the derby workout challenge (like myself) will eat poutine in a squat position to counter the effects of the fatty deliciousness that is poutine. There’s nothing that we do on roller skates that we can’t do on ice skates. And if Three Letters can knit us all CCDD toques, that would be swell. 😉

Canal, winter, ice skates, practice, fun, poutine: a recipe for awesome. And Jayna: you’ll be dressed for skiing so you have NO excuse. 🙂

Skates! Skates! Skates!

While the holidays represent some well-deserved time off for many people, it also means the derby girls at CCDD have to hang up their skates for a couple of weeks while Ottawa-area schools close. (As if they’re not open 24 hours a day to meet our needs. Pft.)

The forced hiatus ends today. Dolls practice at St. Anne’s tonight, 8-10, and Class 1 Freshies are welcome to participate in some of the drills.

We have lots of great plans for 2011 and it’s time to get rolling and we need every skater’s help. For the next two weeks, there will be a committee sign-up sheet at practice. Pick at least one committee that speaks to you and don’t try to spread yourselves too thin. Your choices are:
– Bouts and Scheduling
– Coaching
– Communications and Media
– Fundraising and Sponsorship
– Officials and Safety
For more information about these committees, go to

A reminder to all: blog submissions can be sent to Eastern Block’her (everythingandafter(at) everythingandafter[at] She’ll be updating the site from time to time and needs material! Submissions can be as simple as a quick paragraph about your new skates, your new wheels, the roller skate napkin-holders you made or the derby cozies you’re planning to knit for me. 😉 This is where the world gets to know us so let’s give ’em something to chew on and let’s get the world excited about derby.

Yay to skating again!
